Our Story
LOCAL HERITAGE. RELIABLE COVERAGE.
Over 100 years ago, 35 men agreed to become a corporation under the name of “Farmers and Mechanics Mutual Fire Insurance Company of West Virginia.” Our first policy was issued on March 5, 1878, making us the oldest Domestic Mutual Fire Insurance Company in the state.
More than a century later, we are still working hard for the people of West Virginia, Virginia, and beyond. Our Staff and Board of Directors continue to uphold our long standing commitment to the communities we serve.

Who We Are
Farmers and Mechanics Insurance Companies consist of three insurance companies, each serving a distinct purpose. The controlling company, Farmers and Mechanics Mutual Insurance Company of West Virginia, formed in 1877 and domiciled in West Virginia, writes property and casualty insurance solely in the State of West Virginia. Its wholly owned stock subsidiary, Farmers and Mechanics Fire and Casualty, was formed in 2006 and writes personal auto coverage solely in the State of West Virginia. Pulaski & Giles Mutual, a Virginia domiciled company formed in 1900, writes property and casualty insurance solely in the State of Virginia. Pulaski and Giles Mutual has been affiliated with Farmers and Mechanics Mutual Insurance Company of West Virginia since 2016, where Farmers and Mechanics provides service and support for the mutual benefit and growth of both companies.
