On
the 18th day of December 1877 thirty-five men agreed to become a
corporation by the name of "Farmers and Mechanics Mutual Fire
Insurance Company of West Virginia" certified and acknowledged by the Court
of Berkeley County in the State of West Virginia. We are the oldest Mutual
Fire Insurance Company in West
Virginia. Our first policy was issued on March 5,
1878 for $2,000. In 1941 the State Insurance Commissioner recommended the
Adoption of Constitution and By-Laws. In 1942 we became a member of NAMIC (National
Association of Mutual Insurance Companies).
Farmers & Mechanics is a Property and Casualty
Company represented by over 400 licensed agents with over 100 independent
agencies throughout the state of West
Virginia. We are the 5th largest Homeowner
carrier and the 2nd largest Farmowner carrier in the state.
The company has been governed by a Board of Directors
since its organization in 1877 and currently has a staff of 32 employees.
Farmers & Mechanics is a strong supporter of local community charities
and organizations.
