CANDLE SAFETY
GUIDELINES
Candles are rapidly
becoming one of the leading causes of fires. According to the National Fire
Protection Association, over the past three years Home candle fires in America
caused an average of 9,930 fires, 119 fatalities, and over 1043 injuries, and the numbers are increasing! At Farmers and
Mechanics Insurance, we care! When using candles please use the following
precautions.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Keep children and pets away from lit
candles.
- Candles other than jar candles must be
used in an appropriate non-flammable holder.
- All candles should be placed in a safe,
heat resistant dry surface.
- Do not let wick trimmings, matches or any
foreign matter collect inside the wax pool. This flammable material
might create a fire hazard.
- Burn candles away from drafts, other heat
sources, and all flammable objects or materials.
- Never allow candle flame to touch any
glass surface.
Safety Guidelines For
Jar Candles
- Handle with care, as the container is
fragile. Do not use if jar is cracked, chipped or scratched.
- Place on protected, heat resistant, dry
surface, well away from anything flammable, and out of reach of
children.
- Keep wick trimmed to 1/4" or less at
all times. Keep candles free of wick trimmings, matches or other
matter.
- Do not allow flame to directly touch side
of glass container, as it could crack the glass.
- Keep wick trimmed and centered.
- Sides and bottom of container may become
hot while candle is burning. Handle carefully.
- Discontinue use when 1/2" of wax
remains. This will prevent possible heat damage to the counter surface
or the container itself.
- If the jar has a lid, wait a few minutes
after extinguishing the flame to replace the lid. This will prevent
pressure from building up and cracking the glass.
- Store in a cool, dry place. Exposure to
moisture might inhibit relighting. Color, fragrance and specific usage
affect wax consumption. It is normal for some wax to be left lining
the edges of the container.
A Few Final Cautions
- Remove labels and tags from candles before
burning.
- There is a fire and explosion hazard when
using candles around aerosol sprays, i.e.. hair-spray or flammable liquids.
- Ensure candle containers and holders are
made from tempered glass or have a proper glaze.
- Use extreme caution when
using tea-lights - never leave them unattended.
